Boyd & Jenerette sponsored the Jacksonville Bar Association Young Lawyers Section 2018 Charity Chili Cook-Off held at the Riverside Arts Market in Jacksonville, FL, on February 17, 2018. Since 2009, the Jacksonville Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section has hosted this event to bring law firms from across Jacksonville together for an afternoon of live music, charity and competition. This year’s Chili Cook-Off benefitted Rethreaded, a charity working to fight human trafficking and support survivors of the sex trade on a local and global level. The Claimant, a Senior Safety Manager, would travel from job site to job site conducting safety assessments and mock OSHA investigations. While on the port facility of a customer conducting such an assessment, he injured his shoulder. At a hearing before the ALJ of the State Board of Workers’ Compensation in Georgia, Boyd & Jenerette successfully defended against a claim brought by a longshoreman injured in the course and scope of employment. The longshoreman contended that his injuries were such that he continued to suffer a disability for which he was entitled to ongoing indemnity and medical benefits. The Second District Court of Appeal recently issued an opinion, which examines when a filing constitutes “a statement of fact of death” under Florida Rule of Civil Procedure 1.260.
